Urban Marigold is known for pushing the boundaries of floral design by combining vibrant colors, unexpected textures, and a fresh perspective on what wedding flowers can be. Naturally, this vibrant summer wedding was no exception. For Meg and Jared’s Malibu celebration, we took their vision and ran with it – creating statement – making florals that didn’t just look incredible, but also aligned with our commitment to sustainability.
We focus on using eco-friendly design mechanics and sourcing locally grown flowers whenever possible. Specifically, our go-to flower suppliers, Mayesh and the Ecology Center in Orange County, are trusted partners who provide us with the freshest seasonal blooms. As a result, we can create standout arrangements that are not only visually striking, but also environmentally conscious.
Furthermore, we are always on the lookout for less obvious blooms to include in our wedding flower designs. For this particular summer wedding, we incorporated flowering celery to add unexpected texture and depth to the wedding ceremony installation and aisle pieces, which truly elevated the overall look.
Our process is all about collaboration – working closely with each couple to make sure every floral detail reflects their personality and style. Meg and Jared wanted florals that were modern, bold, and anything but ordinary. We delivered with a show-stopping installation and vibrant arrangements that stood up to the heat of a Southern California summer.
Southern California in July presents unique challenges for floral design. The heat and strong sunlight can take a toll on fresh flowers, making it essential to select resilient blooms that can hold up under these conditions. We need to ensure any heat sensitive flowers are receiving adequate TLC. When designing for this vibrant summer wedding, our team took extra care in transporting and hydrating the flowers to keep them in peak condition. This attention to detail allowed us to create florals that looked stunning against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, ensuring that the flower arrangements stayed fresh and beautiful from the ceremony through to the late-night festivities was a priority.
One of our favorite ways to create an impact at weddings is through large-scale floral installations that make a statement. These installations not only set the tone for the ceremony but can also be repurposed to add a wow factor to the wedding reception.
For Meg and Jared’s Malibu wedding, we designed a deconstructed floral arch. Focusing on a vibrant summer wedding color palette of coral, light blue, pops of orange and yellow marigolds alongside eye catching accents of purple flowers. We were able to build a structure that was both visually stunning and eco-friendly using a combination of:
chicken wire
metal stands
Oshun Pouches — a sustainable floral foam alternative that provides ample hydration
We began by constructing the arch with a base of lush, locally sourced foliage including the flowering celery, this gave us a solid structure to add height and texture. From there, we layered in focal flowers: coral dahlias, light blue delphinium for added gesture and movement, and striking purple alliums for height. Clusters of yellow and orange marigolds added pops of bright color, enhancing the installation’s visual appeal. Each bloom was grouped thoughtfully to draw the eye, and the use of OshunPouches ensured that the flowers remained fresh and vibrant all day long, even under the warm Southern California sun.
The wedding arch installation, against backdrop of the pacific ocean, provided a perfect photo op for the bridal party and guests to capture stunning wedding photos.
Our team were then on hand to carefully move the flower installation to frame the sweetheart table at the outdoor reception. This seamless transition allowed the couple to enjoy their ceremony florals throughout the entire day while also maximizing the investment in their wedding floral designs.
For the reception, we fully embraced a color-blocking aesthetic that brought vibrancy and energy to the tablescape. With bright, colorful hurricane candles in shades of orange, lilac, and red, the tables were set in a way that paired perfectly with bold bud vase floral arrangements. Each table featured a unique combination of blooms, including focal flowers like dahlias, snapdragons, and delphinium. By clustering similar colors, we created a cohesive yet dynamic look.
Additionally, to tie everything together, there were crisp white tablecloths as the base and bold lilac napkins. These elements picked up on the vibrant hues of the floral arrangements, adding a fresh and modern touch to the setting. As a thoughtful nod, the couple included pots of locally made honey as wedding favors at each place setting, giving guests a sweet, sustainable gift to take home.
We take pride in showcasing seasonal blooms, the jaw dropping bridal bouquet was no exception. Meg’s bouquet was a stunning blend of seasonal flowers, including lush dahlias, delicate light blue delphinium, locally grown coral snapdragons, and elegant clematis vines.
Each flower was carefully selected not only for its color and texture but also for its ability to withstand the warm Malibu weather. The bouquet’s vibrant color palette beautifully complemented Meg’s bridal look, making it a focal point throughout the day.
Our commitment to thoughtful details extended to the ribbon selection, which we sourced from a local ribbon supplier in Orange County. The ribbon tied in beautifully with the wedding’s color scheme and supported another small business close to us in Orange County.
At Urban Marigold, we’re committed to using sustainable floral practices, and this wedding was no exception. We utilized eco-friendly mechanics, avoiding floral foam, and opted for reusable and biodegradable materials to construct our arrangements. Working with locally grown flowers from the Ecology Center not only supports sustainable agriculture but also ensures that the flowers are fresh and seasonal. Where possible we aim to reduce the environmental impact of shipping blooms from outside the region.
Using eco-friendly mechanics allows us to craft designs that are as gentle on the environment as they are visually stunning
This Malibu wedding was a perfect example of how vibrant, colorful florals can completely transform an outdoor space. We collaborate closely with couples and wedding planners to ensure that each floral design is thoughtfully curated to reflect the couple’s vision while aligning with the season. By choosing the right blooms and sustainable practices, we create stunning arrangements that are as beautiful as they are environmentally friendly.
